The Airline that was considered only second to Pan Am as among the greatest airlines in aviation history when it thrived during the golden age of Air Travel, TWA (Trans World Airlines) was infact one of the original "Big Four" airlines in the US which was established by the 1930's. It was even headed by the famous millionaire aviator Howard Hughes from the late 1930s to the late 40's. TWA had the most modern and biggest propeller aircraft fleet for their passenger services long before the coming of the jet age in the 1960s. Indeed, TWA was only second to PAN AM with its far-reaching network of international routes which made it the second unofficial flag carrier of the United States. By the jet age, TWA became a trendsetter in air travel style, fashion, decor and top notch in-flight and on ground service with architectural masterpieces like the TWA terminal in New York's JFK. TWA's 747 became the first the world to show in-flight movies for passengers through large projector screens. Like Pan Am, however, airline deregulation in the US took a huge blow to TWA, and it gradually declined by the late 1980s. Surviving several bankruptcies, TWA would continue to hang on even after the deadly crash of TWA flight 800 in 1996. It was the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001 that sealed it's fate - American Airlines would buy out TWA in late 2001 resulting in a short-lived merger, but American would drop the TWA logo and and corporate colors by 2002, resulting to the end of TWA.
