Firing a rocket engines anywhere on the large launchpad causes smoke to appear in the middle.

I ended up landing a booster from orbit onto the launchpad, and while I was firing my engines I noticed that engine smoke was appearing right in the middle of the launchpad despite the fact that I was nowhere near the middle.
