Starting your entry, you're coming in hot! Steer in the atmosphere and aim for a safe spot to land. In the middle of a valley, maybe? (If you can)
Instructions taken from my other post which contains the craft.
USER MANUAL
Recommended Settings
- Enable re-entry damage, re-entry trail, and camera shake for the best experience!
Preparing the entry
- Get into a hyperbolic orbit with periapsis at 11.5 km. (i.e. just an encounter).
- There is no fuel to get into an elliptic orbit.
- Ditch the cruising stage.
- Face retrograde.
- Activate RCS 10.
During entry
- Your entry velocity will be around 3630 m/s. (On real Mars that would be 12000 m/s)
- Aerodynamics become effective around 22-18km msl.
- Let RCS (activation 10) thrusters steer you through the atmosphere to where you want to land.
Steering guidelines
- Gain more lift to go up slightly if you need a longer distance. Simply tilt forward 10 to 20 degrees, but be careful, before you know it you'll skip the atmosphere.
- To steer left or right simply yaw left or right. This can be done more aggressively.
- Always monitor your fairing base, which becomes the hottest part next to your heat shield. If it gets too hot (700 C), re-center.
- It is not recommended to exceed 20 degrees for longer periods of time in any direction.
- Lift and steering can of course be combined.
- At slower velocities, you can exceed 20 degrees more safely.
Landing
- When approaching around 1200 m/s, re-center, ditch the fairing.
- Open the chute.
- Proceed to ditch the heat shield.
- Ignite the landing stage.
- It is mandatory to activate RCS 7 in order to control it.
- Ditch the chute at a comfortable velocity (around 200 m/s) and land.
