the red-orange hue of duna is caused by the abundance of iron oxide on its surface.
millions of years ago, duna may have had oceans of water within the canyons, but the atmosphere to sustain the water mostly escaped, and now the water is only in the form of ice on the surface.
it is very unlikely that life developed on its own here, but rather, duna was colonized by proto-kerbals in the past.

btw the poles were originally going to be based off the actual biome map of duna but there was an error so they're procedural now
