Be able to change the material the fuel tanks are made of. (eg. aluminum, carbon fiber, etc) It would impact weight/price

This would induce difference in strength, weight & default heat tolerance, it would be much more realistic trying to balance COM of a craft with different materials in parts.
I love it -

You could integrate damage threshold variability into it as well. Steel tanks would be heavier but have higher temperature resistance and damage threshold (like 150 points instead of 100). Materials like carbon fiber are super strong and light, so they could be much more expensive than regular fuel tanks. Lots of different ways to add depth to the gameplay and it would be relatively easy to implement

Think we could expand on this, using different materials for other parts as well, and even allow the player to get materials from resources on planets, as well as allowing players to spend resources on parts so that they won't spend as much money.
