Expand Station quest not working

The mission to expand the space station with the nexus cross isn't working for me. At first it assumed a ship I launched without the payload was the ship for the quest, and then after switching the craft to one that has the payload, it didn't move past the "Launch with Nexus Cross Expansion" task even after I'd neared the station, docked, and deorbited the ship that took the piece there. Basically I completed the mission but it never got past the launch step. I tried switching to a different craft and blowing that one up so that the game would immediately register the new ship as the one for the quest. I also tried replacing the nexus cross with a new one in case I had messed with one of the parts somehow. Neither worked. I did it a third time for the screenshot but I accidentally destroyed some of the station this time. Strangely this didn't invalidate the quest
