With the beginning of the Brazilian space program and the founding of the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB), the need arose to develop homegrown technologies for future orbital missions. This led to the creation of the Proton IA, the agency’s first suborbital rocket.
Designed to conduct scientific research and test new systems, Proton IA made its maiden flight on April 1, 1984, marking the start of a series of successful launches—six consecutive missions without failures.
The rocket features a two-stage configuration, allowing it to reach supersonic speeds and cross the edge of space with ease. The first stage is equipped with a PME-30 engine, accelerating the vehicle to approximately 600 m/s. The second stage, powered by a PME-8 engine, carries the payload to altitudes of up to 200 km, depending on the flight trajectory.
