I can't believe that it's been over 2 years since this post and some people are still coming back to it to do it and complete it. Could you please consider making engine designs more realistic? Engines used in vacuum have a larger engine bell than those used at sea level. I would love for this to be reflected in your models.
As it is in its current state, shapeable parts may be something he adds in. It would take a bit to implement the stuff from SimplePlanes (which I assume would be used, in at least some ways). It may take a bit longer to add, but since the world is in 3D, I can imagine coding the environment and planets would take a very long time.
@Bmcclory Make sure you pack enough RCS. My method also doesn't require a large of fuel to adjust the course of the satellite. Make sure you match velocities before passing it. Also, don't be afraid to brute force things.
When docking, follow the procedure below. This works pretty much every time, and as you get more used to it, you can do it faster and faster.
Match your orbit with the station you want to dock with.
Tap on the station you want to dock with.
If your station is less than 180 degrees in front of you, lower your periapsis slightly. If it is more than 180 degrees ahead, increase your apoapsis slightly.
Time warp. By doing step 2, it should tell you your intercept, or closest approach.
Once your closest approach is within reasonably close distance (I normally go for at or around 1 kilometer), use RCS to make it into an intercept. This step may not be entirely necessary, as you may get an intercept on the first try.
When you reach your intercept, adjust your speed and try to match speeds with the station.
Using RCS, dock by lining up the docking port and plug, and gently move towards the station. For this, I would not recommend more than 2 meters a second.
once you have made contact, adjust as needed until the docking port matches on.
Congratulations, you have just docked a spacecraft!
Some important notes:
Lowering your orbit allows you to move faster relative to that of a station with a higher orbit.
In the same sense, making your orbit higher will slow you down.
Unfortunately, there isn't a visual cue for satellites, so you will just have to look at the map, very carefully.
Docking is very frustrating, and practicing will help a lot. Don't give up!
@Bmcclory I also know that he mentioned about probes. I'm thinking that if he's adding probes, he'll be adding people too. Anyway, I will probably develop a Launch Escape System, like I have on the original SR
