I like the terrain in the background of picture B, but I have to agree that picture A is better for a thumbnail. The jet looks more like it's about to come off the screen and fly at me in A, while in B it looks like it's just gonna move out of frame.

@Tweedle_Aerospace Yes, that's what they "claim", but what they don't tell you is that every time you click on a link, open a website, or do basically anything, you're agreeing to let them share some info(usually just metrics for statistical purposes) and it doesn't warn you that it's doing it. They also openly share info between companies that are under their control. I have a YouTube channel, and if I had enough views, it would show me info about demographics (age, gender, country, traffic source, etc.) that I'm surprised it even shows me, but YouTube is owned by Google, so it's technically not sharing info(although every add on youtube uses your info to target you). Then there's cookies, which you have to accept to visit most sites, and part of the agreement for those is that they can see some of your info(once again for statistics and advertising) and those usually don't pop up, or if they do it's just "This site uses cookies. Accept?" and it blocks your view of the site on purpose to get you to click accept. And yeah, apps have ask for your permission to do certain things, but they only have to ask general questions(like "can this app access your camera/microphone?" not "can we use your camera/microphone to secretly record you?") which could mean anything and include anything.

Look. I'm not trying to argue or anything, and I totally get what you're saying. We're supposed to be able to trust the internet, but we really can't. Even with the best intentions, sometimes things just don't work right. The internet was supposed to be free access to information for all, but it seems like it's turning into a corporate cash cow where the only information available is how to make more money or scam more people using the internet...

Sorry man. I didn't mean to drag this on like this... I'm done with this whole subject for now, just had to get that out there. I hope things go better for you in the future and you don't get any more scam messages.

@Mustang51 just SR2. It was recommended to me by the google play at some point like a year and a half ago but I didn't want to pay for a game I didn't know anything about. More recently I watched Scott Manley's videos about SR2 and finally decided to buy it for this last Christmas. Only after playing for a bit and joining this community did I really find out about SimplePlanes. I'd like to try it too, I just don't have the space on my phone for 2 of these games

    +1 3.7 years ago
  • Profile image

@Mustang51 lol it's so simple you can play SimpleRockets 1 on SimpleRockets 2 (someone's working on an mfd program that plays SR1 virtually in SR2. It's only a partial game so far, but it's crazy that it works at all!)

Also, I've been watching Everyday Astronaut and Scott Manley for years now to get good info on space stuff. I also like the Angry Astronaut, but he's more like space-news and alternative opinions. Another good one is Smarter Every Day, I've been watching Destin's videos for years too, and he covers all sorts of stuff I'm interested in, especially aerospace and military engineering!

@Mustang51 I actually hadn't seen that video in forever and forgot about the other cycles when I first responded...but yeah, I think gas 2 is just closed cycle(but I can't say which one for sure without asking the devs).

And I believe that's just the names the devs went with? Idk, but it seems like they took a little creative liberty with naming certain things(although I understand why. Rocket science is confusing sometimes lol).

So, you're talking about the preburner. Basically it's like a tiny rocket engine with a turbopump attached to the side of the main rocket engine. During startup of the engine, the preburner ignites first, basically behaving like a jet engine(spinning a turbine that in turn pumps more fuel through the system), and providing a steady constant fuel pressure to the engine.

Now, in order to not melt the preburner, you have to burn it fuel rich(oxygen rich is possible, but waaaay expensive and still tends to melt). Only a tiny bit of the fuel actually goes through the burner, most of it gets pumped past it to the main combustion chamber.

    __

There's a number of different engine cycles depending on the fuel/ox ratio, preburner size, turbine design, and general fuel flow. Fuel rich preburners for example tend to dump exhaust outside the engine(meaning a lot of partially burned fuel gets wasted), but some of them dump exhaust back into the combustion chamber of the engine to improve efficiency. Then there's full flow staged combustion(SpaceX Raptor) where you have an oxygen rich preburner and a fuel rich preburner that together use all the fuel/lox in the most efficient way possible(at least in theory).

I believe cycle 1 dumps the exhaust from the preburner outside the engine (Falcon 9 first stage), while cycle 2 dumps the exhaust back into the engine(many russian rocket engines as well as other more recent designs).

@Tweedle_Aerospace well... Yes. And. No. They do sell aggregate info(stuff like they use for targeted advertising, age, general location, etc) and they share most of your basic info with other "trusted" sites and agencies for statistical analysis. They don't however, like to give out info to scammers and untrustworthy people, but it still happens occasionally (even google falls for scams sometimes). And yeah, other sites are where most of that stuff comes from.

@HermesE no problem! I hope it all works out right

    3.7 years ago
  • Profile image

@HermesE not sure about that. It might work like that, but you might have to add more checks to see if another mfd is active or some kind of override for the door to function properly. Otherwise, I think you've done a fine job of prototyping something I didn't even know I was missing out on! 🤯

@Tweedle_Aerospace also, I haven't gotten any spam messages either(besides the phone calls I always get)

    3.7 years ago
  • Profile image

@Tweedle_Aerospace It still might not be Jundroo's fault directly. For all we know, they might just "rent" their domain from another company(like Wordpress or Wyx) that sells our info without Jundroo's knowledge. It could also still be something completely unrelated like an email bot that messages every email account it possibly can regardless of who it is. The only way to know for sure that it is caused by this site would be to create another new email and not use it for this site, but definitely use it for some other site you trust just as a test. Or send a couple messages back and forth between your old email. If that email also gets the same kind of messages, then it can't be Jundroo's fault.

As a side note, my mom has gotten spam emails about weird stuff(mostly obvious links to porn, but also really bad stuff too) off and on for the last 10 years or so. They go away for awhile, but then pop up by the hundreds every so often, whenever the economy isn't that great(like the last year now. Every time there's government aid money, the scammers come running).

Well, I wouldn't jump to conclusions so quickly... You may in fact be correct about what happened, idk, but it could also be any number of other things as well. Gmail(or any other email service), Wordpress(and most other blog-sites), Android/iOS, and basically every ISP provider sell your info and there's nothing you can do about it besides just not using any of it(which is nearly impossible if you want to use the internet at all).
I understand how you feel though. I used to get a ton of spam calls on my old phone number, so recently I got a new one hoping it would stop the calls, and it worked... For about 2 days before the slow trickle of bot callers increased back to a constant roar. It seems that's just how things are anymore...

I've recently been messing around with this and I believe so. What Tweedle said is right on the mark(give or take 50km) as far as I know. It might not be to scale with the rest of the system, but it should work more or less like GEO irl

True. We might also get lucky and get to see the first launch off one of the new floating launch pads in that case(if they can finish it by then). It took F9 quite a few tries before it landed successfully, but after seeing SN8-10 perform way above expectations, I think BN2-3 have good chances of success

You want your Apoapsis and Periapsis to be as close as possible to each other. This might take a few burns(especially if you're piloting it yourself). Basically you have 2 choices: burn prograde at Apoapsis to increase Periapsis, or burn retrograde at Periapsis to decrease Apoapsis. Which you do just depends on what altitude you want to end up at. Be very careful and use short burns at low throttle to do this, or use the maneuver(burn) node tool in the map view to plan it in advance and get it more precise

@HermesEngineering Impressive design! Waaaay more advanced than anything I've done yet, but I'm also just starting(and still learning). You know how to use vizzy? I get the very basics, but I'm no programmer so it's like learning a whole new language (which I've tried multiple times... spanish... chinese... russian...). Could you possibly teach me some stuff(or at least give me tips and help when you can?) if so, because then I could finish my crafts to the level of functionality I want( I've been playing with some MFDs I downloaded for gps, etc and I want to make stuff like that)

@Tweedle_Aerospace it's all good, I expected BN1 to fly too and just found out today that it's not. As far as BN2, BN3, and SN20 goes, you're completely right, that is the plan, especially if the current pace of development keeps going. I said "by the end of the year" just to account for any delays that might happen. And yeah, I'm worried about the orbital launch/landing site too. That's a lot of work to redo

    3.7 years ago
  • Profile image

@HermesEngineering lol yeah, I've been meaning to take advantage of that, I just want to make sure my crafts are ready for that first(which is real close for the Magellanic 1). And thanks! I was wondering when people were gonna start asking for uploads. I'll try to get a couple things together tonight if I have time

    3.7 years ago

Unfortunately, BN1 isn't meant to fly, just testing the construction and how to move and service one. It might "fly" if it fails cryo-proofing, but most likely BN2 or BN3 will be the first to fly, and even then, not that high(probably as high as SN8-10). I do hope they can begin orbital test flights by the end of the year though

You know, that's actually a great idea! I hope it goes well for you and your classmates. An educational game like this would have helped me a lot in school...

As far as your main question goes, I can't really help you much. It should be easy to do once you talk a teacher into requesting it, but idk. I've used other educational resources where the only proof I needed to use it for free was my student email(since it's through the school and they can verify that you really are a student)

@ChaoticGraviton I'd hate to see that booster transporter go away, though I do understand the need to upgrade. The 2nd stage mounting vehicle looks interesting too, but probably not that great at it's job(just guessing). Congrats on the successful test too! I'm sad the second stage failed on the re-flight, but the fact that the booster worked a second time is an impressive feat regardless. I'm taking baby steps while you guys are taking strides! Can't wait for the next iteration
